Sep 1: 11.2 Release

Some features in this post require a Diagnostics Pack license.

I noticed my Netvibes home page light up today with the release of 11.2 on OTN (Greg's is just one of a bunch of posts) - official home page here.

More important to me was the documentation and there were two things that I dived straight into.

1) Parallel Query, because I saw a presentation somewhere that suggested there have been a few changes here and the 'What's New in Performance' section seems to indicate that. I'll need a much closer look.

2) ASH. As something that's still relatively young in Oracle terms, ASH development seems to move ahead at a pace. There are a bunch of new columns in 11gR1 that I talk about on the course (not least the SQL Execution Plan Line details) but I was pretty shocked by the number of new columns in 11gR2 and will need to play around with them to work out the more valuable. The good thing about ASH (at the moment) is that it's such a simple and elegant feature, that simply looking at the columns suggests new uses. Quite a few jumped out, particularly as me and my mate Jari had been talking about this just the other week when he'd been bemoaning the lack of a feature to give him session-level history of temporary space usage (he works on a very busy DW). If only he had 11.2 ;-)

This post also gives me a chance to clear up a housekeeping matter that's been on my To Do list for a few weeks. Every time I blog about anything that requires a Diagnostics Pack license, sure enough, someone will mention that in the comments. I decided long ago that I wasn't going to drag out the debate any longer and would focus on the technical benefits but I've changed my mind a little. I'm not going to drag out the debate, but I do think a simple 'Features in this post require a Diagnostics Pack license' would both make the posts less likely to mislead and, hopefully, reduce the understandable desire of people to post a 'yeah, but you need to pay Oracle extra for this' comment. It will probably take quite a while to back-port the change, but I'll do my best.

On a similar note and because I wanted to tuck this down the bottom of a post and not make it too self-congratulatory, I'm now one of those Oracle Ace Director things. Thanks to various people for that, not least Marco who made some pretty convincing arguments ;-) I'm sure that means there will be occasions when Oracle are paying my travel and accommodation expenses (outside of the obvious cases where I'm doing teaching work for them). When that happens, I'll include a note to that effect so people can decide whether I'm being bribed or not! (Frankly, they had me with that red fleece!)

Honestly, those new ASH columns have got me excited. How sad is that?!?

If you bring the beer, I will be attend with the plastic mandatory beer cups ;-)

I liked to tease you brits ;-)

Seriously - Congrats you have earned it - How many blogposts now ? Keep up the good work in filling in the ASH, ADDM, etc blanks I don't get too...

Just to elaborate

Tried to find a news (EN) link but can't. Apparently it was only a "hot issue" in Holland (http://www.telegraaf.nl/buitenland/4674090/__Bier_in_pubs_voortaan_in_plastic__.html?p=2,2) that the English will have to drink in the future from plastic pitchers etc (at least according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs) and the other hand I saw on www that it is an issue already for a long time...

Having had the opportunity to see great soccer games in England (one was in Ipswich: Scotland-England) in a pub and really enjoyed the atmosphere, I really can't imagine drinking beer during the games from plastic pitchers etc...

Congratulations on the Oracle ACE thing, Doug.

I know there's been lengthy discussion about the merits (or otherwise) of the program and the potential conflict of interest.

I take the view that you have put a lot of time and effort into the Oracle 'community' and this is Oracle's way of acknowledging both the time and effort and perhaps more importantly, the quality of what you are producing.

So, good luck to you. I also think your 'full disclosure' policy is exactly the right way to deal with it.

PS. Please post pictures of any unsolicited thermal garments that mysteriously arrive in the post.

How many blogposts now ?

713. Crikey! 90% is chatty nonsense. Still, even 70 technical posts would be alright ;-)

I think you'll find that's the English you're talking about! Leave us Scots out of it ;-)

Cheers, Andy.

Well there certainly has been in my head, don't know about anyone else. But once you're having lengthy discussions with yourself, it's time to sort yourself out!

There are some things you can *definitely* count on me for, although The Boys are refusing my request for an appropriate coronation with crown and all ....

LOL

I new that refering to 'brits' would tick you into a reaction - was just too easy...

Well done.

So that's no paid work for 18 months and loads of speaking at conferences for you then... :-)

Cheers

Tim...

no paid work for 18 months

Crikey, I wish someone had warned me about that. All because of the ACE D program?

loads of speaking at conferences for you

Would have been anyway, already did, all on my own time and my own dime. That's the way it used to work, Tim ;-)

Congrats on your "promotion" - must say thought that your blog has been quite quiet lately.

Enjoying my job too much ;-)

Or maybe it's hard keeping up to date when I can't go home at the end of my 7 hour day (!) and collapse on the settee with nothing else to take care of ....

Plus, this lot have me doing presentations once a fortnight! Enjoyable, of course, but time-consuming, even if it's just worrying about them ;-)

Meanwhile "Housemate of the Month" is degenerating into "Housemate of the Year" at the current rate of promotion into that coveted spot! ;-)

wow, ASH is exploding - 95 fields in 11gR2 ! Thanks for pointing this out. And I thought 11gR2 didn't have much of interest for me. Now I've got some stuff to dig into.

#19 - Martin W 2009-09-04 23:00 - (Reply)

Ace Director? wow, never knew I knew someone that good :-)
Congratulations Doug, you deserve it. {Especially the unpaid oracle promotional duties.... :-) }

Going back to another point you raise, about avoiding people saying "but that is a paid-for extra option". Are you also going to mention if what you blog on needs Enterprise Edition? I got so much grief for saying how much I liked Paritioning, more for the need for EE than being an extra option...

#20 - Doug Burns said:
2009-09-05 09:20 - (Reply)

No, I won't be mentioning that. Frankly, I have to draw the line somewhere and whilst I know people like using Standard Edition as a cost-saving option and good luck to them, I find that absolutely none of my clients do, ever. Not because they're unaware of it, but because they just decide they want the flexibility.

Then again, every site I've worked at in the past 3 or 4 years apart from one very short period have had Diagnostics and Tuning packs too.

I'd be here all day saying what could and couldn't be used in Standard Edition and I have better things to do with my time.

So it's safe to assume that whenever I talk about Oracle, I'm talking about Enterprise Edition.

Which isn't to say that I don't think you're making a very good point, but that's the way I see it.

#22 - Peter Lyons-Lewis 2009-09-06 09:40 - (Reply)

.... but Doug, I think it may possibly be a good idea that you should drink your beer from plastic glasses, having been on the receiving end of your Carling a while back... ;-)

Congratulations on the promotion.
