May 29: Data Warehouse / BI Community
For anyone with specific experience and interest in Data Warehouse/Business Intelligence issues, here's your chance to build up that community a little. Mark Rittman's looking for more people to get involved with the forum he runs.
I'm in no position to lecture anyone about community involvement, but I would have thought it was in your interests to get involved, otherwise you could end up being (horror of horrors) a 'straight DBA'. (C) Peter Scott, 2006.

May 28: Updated Links
When I restored an old template recently to cure a formatting problem, I lost the most recently added links, which I've now restored. Although I use Thunderbird to stay up to date with most blogs, I sometimes use these links to browse around a bit, so that's their main purpose and I'm glad their back.
I think the only new one is Daniel Fink's. Dan's topics are right up my street and we have a shared interest in the occasionally strange behaviour of automatic undo management (but that's another story).
I also enjoyed revisiting Beth's blog, which I'd forgotten about. There's a lot of sense in there, for example on consultants (that made me smile and sigh in quick succession) and it's a smart idea to review the Concepts Guide that is mentioned often, but the inexperienced might not know what they'll find in there. I like Beth's blog - a lot.
The next job will be to add some links to the few blogs that might be worth referring back to

May 26: Northern Server Tech Day Photos
Lisa's uploaded her (pre-haircut!) photos,
Which include yet another photo of one of my graphs! Cheeky minx
I'm definitely going to have to give those graphs a rest for a while ...
Thanks, Lisa!

May 24: Scottish Round-up
At the end of a horrible 24 hours consolidating Test/Development servers here are a couple of Scottish links. I've been holding back this blog because of a cow but I'm still waiting to get my camera back from my daughter. All will become clear later.
First, in a comment to an earlier blog, Joel Garry pointed out this San Diego/Edinburgh link, complete with animal references!
Next, Tom Kyte sent me this link. Apparently you only need to be able to speak in a funny accent to become one of us. If you are planning on making the leap, do bear in mind that We Do Not Use Keys or Washing Facilities. We Do Eat Deep-fried Mars Bars, apparently. On a more serious note, I'm happy to say the survey results reflect my personal experience. Scotland has long-standing immigrant communities, particularly from the Indian sub-continent, Italy (and most places probably). When I hear a broad Scottish accent coming from any colour face, I must admit I tend to think 'Scottish' before I think Indian or whatever. That's not to say that Scotland isn't a racist country - I'm sure you can find those attitudes in most countries - but that's not the way I see things. If you read that article, the joke is how negative our views are towards the English in comparison. However, we're only little (even with the added height from the enormous chips on our shoulders) and they're big enough to take it
Let's face it, I'm going to have to listen to football commentators assume I care as much about England as they do for the next month and a bit. I'm looking forward to that!
