Jul 24: OT: Norway

Having had one of my best conference experiences ever this year in the company of many good Norwegians, this weeks news saddened me and it must have come as a hell of a shock to the country as a whole, not just those involved. Their horror is difficult to imagine.

I really don't have adequate words, frankly.

At the same time, it inspired me to hear ...

"We must – and will – meet terror with more democracy, not less. We must not lock up Norwegian society. That would be piling tragedy upon tragedy."

My heart goes out to those involved and I look forward to going back to Norway next year ...

It is absolutely chilling. The closer tragedy is to home, the more potent it strikes and no society is more similar to my own Swedish that the Norwegian.

I just find it so disheartening that humans can sink so low. I will just think of the murderer as some kind of disease, a cancer of society which, sadly, we did not catch in time.

As you know, Doug, I have an odd way of (not) perceiving the world. However, the recent situation in Norway both deeply bothers me - and deeply heartenes me. It is now a few days after the event and two things become more clear. This man was wrong, broken. Norway as a society is right. Occasionally such terrible things will happen. Hopefully, some societies will continue to respond in a way which says "yes, but our society is much more important than this".
