May 16: Can't shut me up

Chris Muir of the Australian Oracle User Group conducted an email interview with me for their journal recently. Here's the online version.

Thanks, Chris.

Great interview. Some genuinely considered and interesting questions.

as I try to stop the [Pythian] Canadian employees being dragged out of their beds.

:-)

Rest assured, for all the recent and ongoing acquisitions, that legacy product, the Oracle database, is still alive and kicking at Oracle Corporation.

Yeah, but the emphasis was on the word 'try'. As I recall, my last attempt led to quite a few of my colleagues being woken up earlier than expected ;-)

Nice interview Doug.

One comment -- no reason to feel insecure about self-taught credentials. As fast as our industry moves, we're all self-taught to some degree.

Besides, I'll always take a well-read person without a degree over a degreed person who only read what was mandated. From what I see in your writing style I'm pretty sure which category you fall into.

Beth,

Nice interview Doug.

Yeah, I wasn't 100% sure about doing it but Chris' questions were really interesting.

As fast as our industry moves, we're all self-taught to some degree.

Good point - I'd never really thought of it that way before. To be honest, it's not that big a deal any more, but I do wish I'd had a little more time in full-time education.

more time in full time education, cheap beer, bad jokes, no responsibility - can't see the attraction myself :-)

Well, surely this means its time for you to come down to Perth for the AUSOUG conference this year ?

(It will be a lot warmer than Canada!)

Mmmmm ... and the big spiders?

It will take a while to overcome the fear and the phobia, but in time, the spiders will eventually learn not to be terrified of people from the north :-)

For the avoidance of any doubt, all views expressed here are my own and not those of past or current employers, clients, friends, Oracle Corporation, my Mum or, indeed, Flatcat. If you want to sue someone, I suggest you pick on Tigger, but I hope you have a good lawyer. Frankly, I doubt any of the former agree with my views or would want to be associated with them in any way.
